Canada Connection
333° 15' NETTo get back to my previous post on Canada and making a trip there. The plan is to go to Vancouver. Time of the trip around April-May 2005.
I've never been there before, so if anyone has good tips concerning the local must-see attractions or things like that, I'd like to hear about them. Especially places where one can take nice pictures are highly wanted.
Also recommendations for a nice hotel are concidered as a valuable information.

The beaver is a truly proud and noble animal
348° 06' NETFor some reason I like Canada. I don't have a good reason for it, I just do. Just check the sidebar.
Maybe it is because of the similarities I see between my country and Canada...maybe it is something else.
I think this Molson beer commercial is a good example.

Christmas carols
275° 12' NETAnd to beat up the Xmas feel, I have a perfect song for it - full of feeling and that wonderful Xmas time magic.
Tune: Last Christmas by George Michael
Last Christmas, I gave you my piece
But the very next day, You blew me away
This year, to save me from holes
I'm keeping my .38 special
Last Christmas, I gave you my piece
But the very next day, You blew me away
This year, to save me from holes
I'm keeping my .38 special
Once bitten and twice shy
I keep my distance but you still catch my thigh
Tell me baby how does the recoil feel?
'Well it has a kick, it doesn't surprise me!'
I wrapped it up and sent it
With a note saying "Happy Hunting" I joked, shit
Now I know what a fool I've been
But if you aimed at me now I know you'd not hit me again
Last Christmas, I gave you my piece
But the very next day, You blew me away
This year, to save me from holes
I'm keeping my .38 special...
And so on and so on and then the neighbour is calling the cops...

What did I learn in Lisbon
172° 25' NETWell, the trip is over and done with. It was a great getaway for a few days.
I did learn some things on the way and I have pictures to prove it.
1. Sunrises can be entertaining. I was waiting for this damn thing to come up for a long time. The reason being that the plane was flying away from the sun to other time zone. This one is taken very early in the process of sunrising.
2. They have old buildings in there. This one is a part of an old monastery.
3. You can use your imagination with parking your car.
4. The oldest blogger - since 1732 - comes from Lisbon, Portugal???
5. And last - in our serie of 'What difference does 30 years make?' or 'So close but still 30 years apart' or 'Cracking down on the generation gap."
All in all, it was a nice trip.

I searched the Internet for a worthy Christian and I believe that I may have found one in you
317° 44' NET419 scam aka Nigerian letters. I've got 2 in a couple of days, which were processed by MailWasher.
First one wanted me to believe that there is a widow and mother of three 'all' girls, husband dead in a car accident and he had money in the bank and it can't get out with out my help. Right.
Second came from a princess Genevive (HA!!) who was married to a sheik Hassan who converted into christianity and became Mark Abraham. She is dying of breast cancer and wants to get rid of her money....with my help.
Her husband, the good old Mark, got killed in a bombing in Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988) and was of course a succesfull business man who deposited the money in a security company 'a few years ago'...I guess princess has a different definition for a few years than I do.
I don't know which one is worse, these guys who do these letters and make their fat living with the money they scam OR the people who fall for these pathetic letters. I mean these letters have been around a long time. I would expect that everyone who uses internet also knows it is all just shit.
Anyone interested in seeing how the scammers get scammed, check out http://www.419eater.com/index.htm
It is very entertaining.

Make Love Not SPAM Part 7
285° 10' NETIt is over. Lycos pulls the plug because 'the controversial campaign has accomplished its objectives'.
Well, if the objective was to show that active measures taken against the spammers are too much for Internet backbone(less) providers, then - yeah - the mission is accomplished.
It also shows that if you are a spammer, you really don't have anything to worry about, just keep doing your stuff. Your six is covered by others.
Spamming spins up money and very few of those who do it are sent to jail. One example of a spammer who was sentenced is Mr. Jeremy Jayne. He looks like a second hand cars dealer, but he did make up to $750,000 a month and managed to build a fortune worth $24 million.
To make that happen he was sending up to 20 million spam emails a day.
That's just one guy.
With 20 000 000 emails of shit per day.

Make Love Not SPAM Part 6
244° 58' NETWell, it seems someone tries to make something out of the situation.
F-Secure blogs that they have got reports that a fake Lycos screensaver has been distributed in emails with a subject "Be the first to fight spam with Lycos screen saver".
Of course what you get is not a screensaver but a RAR SFX archive that has embedded keylogger trojan inside.
Nice going.

2. The end of the year is coming closer and with it that jolly good old fellow in red outfit and a pack of reindeers. These animals are magical beings, able to cover incredible distances in a very short time.
It must be very very stressy indeed...so is it any wonder...
Hard work requires hard play...as they say.

Going places: Lisbon, Portugal
338° 10' NETIt is getting closer. Next Saturday I am supposed to be on the plane and heading for Lisbon.
I certainly hope that the weather holds up and it doesn't rain while I am there, I've had enough of that over here.

Anyway, I plan to take some pictures and walk around as much as I can.

Make Love Not SPAM Part 5
325° 45' NETGuys at F-Secure have been doing some snooping around and turns out the maintainers (Starring, a Swedish advertising agency) of www.makelovenotspam.com site can't find any evidence of defacement. F-Secure blog has the whole story and possible explanations for these reported defacement screenshots.
www.makelovenotspam.com is not accessible at the moment, they put up a message which just says "STAY TUNED" so I guess there is more to follow. Also the index page at Starring has changed it's previous Make Love Not SPAM -graphic to something else.

Most Reliable Hosting Providers
320° 08' NETFrom Netcraft:
"Netcraft measures and makes available the response times of fifty leading hosting providers' sites. The performance measurements are made at fifteen minute intervals from four separate points around the internet, and averages are calculated over the immediately preceding 24 hour period."
The interesting point with this is that only 1 (one) company out of top 10 is using Windows.

Make Love Not SPAM Part 4
248° 35' NETOh dear. Now the Lycos screensaver site is blocked by Internet backbones: MakeLoveNotSpam.com site has been blackholed by Global Crossing's worldwide network. This makes it hard to access the site from some parts of the world.
Apparently they are worried about the Internet traffic generated by this screensaver. In principle it is a DDoS attack, nevertheless I saw someone commenting that traffic generated by this screensaver is nothing compared to the traffic caused by pre-teen KaZaa users all over the world.
Lycos denies still that the site has been hacked, but F-Secure blog says they have more than one user who have seen the defacement and have screenshots.
I'm sure this story still holds some twists and turns. We'll see...

Internets
261° 40' NETThis is also interesting. Apparently the republican party in the US is blocking traffic from outside the United States. Blocking prevents you from visiting its official web sites www.gop.com, www.rnc.org and www.GeorgeWBush.com
Why? Around the election time they were having fears over possible DDoS attack. Looks like they haven't got over that yet.
It's very nice if you are an american living outside the US and would like to check out those pages. You have to get someone to do it for you, you have to get 'an insider'.
Maybe this is what George was meaning with that 'internets' comment...which by the way is totally official term in a dictionary.

Make Love Not SPAM Part 3
256° 46' NETAnd the plot thickens. A little article over this at Netcraft.
It seems to be working, some of the targeted spamsites are down...and some not. Anyway, people are trying.
Lycos also denies that the site has been compromised. They say it was a hoax done by the spammers.
Interesting to see how this turns out at the end...
